Excuse the Pun!

I have a new Job!

What is it?

I am an astronaut!

Hows it going?

... I'm over the moon

Above is not a classic example of a new game that we feel has a lot of mileage to it (so far called excuse the pun!). The game developed amidst late night banter at the bateson residence, was furthered at the Miller residence and has suffered a revival during small group (just the type we live and pray for). It is best played within an air of selfless abandon, and often leads to outbursts of hilarity and a few rather dubious dad joke type offerings (these are generally excused within an atmosphere that allows for such fopars recognising that such are the necessary dark side to our advancement in the game).

The gist of the game is you say you have a new job, you are asked howzit going, and you reply with a statement that contains an adjective that fits with the role - a pun!

Please enjoy and let us know how you get on - make your contributions as a comment - and in the event of a publishing deal you shall be considered for a cut!

Happy Pun-ting!

(maybe that is a better name for the game - what do you reckon - best suggestion gets a selection box this Christmas - In fact lets up the stakes best offering of a pun before Dec 24th as voted on by the impartial game wardens (us) also gets a selection box) So there we go 2 not 1, selection boxes up for grabs and the winners entries shall be published within this esteemed blogs - hall of legendary contributions.

Plonker at 3 O'clock

Now, I've always known my husband is a little odd (he married me, didn't he?) but I discovered a new reason to believe this to be true the other day.

Somehow we ended up having a conversation with some friends about which way is '3 O'clock' if you are trying to describe direction to someone (like if someone says - "gorgeous guy at 3 O'clock", for example). Everyone in the room without exception - apart from Sam, and his little sister Jo (equally odd) - thought that 12 O'clock is out infront of you, 3 O'clock to your right, 6 O'clock behind you, 9 O'clock to the left. Of course, this is the correct way.

Sam and his delusional sibling both thought (for differing reasons) that 12 was behind you, 6 out in front, 3 to the left and 9 to the right. Jo went as far as to say that she imagined that she actually became the clock and then imagined the clock lying down flat. I still don't understand why anyone in their right mind would think this, but there you go.

What is interesting is that the misinformed pair are actually related, which got me thinking whether there was some sort of faulty gene involved here, or at the very least, their brains operate differently from the rest of us.

I'd love to know if I have any other friends in the whole world who think like they do, or are they really as special as I have always thought? Comments, as always please!

By the way - Sam and Jo - I do love you both really. Life would be very boring if we were all the same :)

Gambolling?

Well, I learnt something new the other day (I do learn new things every day, really, but this was particularly fascinating). Apparently, to call a 'forward roll' (of the gymnastic kind) a 'gambol' is something unique to us Brummies!
I found this very hard to believe so checked out the dictionary, which says:

gam·bol (gmbl)
intr.v. gam·boled or gam·bolled, gam·bol·ing or gam·bol·ling, gam·bols
To leap about playfully; frolic.
n.
A playful skipping or frolicking about.
[Alteration of French gambade, horse's jump, from Old French, perhaps from Old Italian gambata, from gamba, leg, from Late Latin, hoof, perhaps from Greek kamp, bend.]

No mention of actually rolling over here, either - in fact a jump is nothing like a roll.
Could it be true?

So. The reason for this post is to hear your views on this very important subject - is it true that using the word gambol for this purpose is a Birmingham idiosyncrasy? (Is it also true that I am over-using the italics button now that I have located it?) Or do any other areas, people groups or nations use the word for this reason? Are there any other words used for this physical activity?
Comments please so we can settle this matter once and for all!

Incidentally, Noah learnt to gambol/forward roll/rollover this week. My sister Keely taught him this new skill, and I am sure it will prove invaluable to him over the years.

A new addition

What better place to begin our musings than with the introduction of our latest member of the Miller clan - Jude Samuel Miller, born on March 4th - pictured here alongside his big brother Noah.
We're 7 weeks in now, pretty tired but happy all the same. He's like his Dad (thinks Hannah) and very handsome already :) Noah loves him too, finds it hard to leave him alone to be honest.
Anyway it's taken us ages to work out how to put photos on and stuff so we will sign off here.
Don't expect this blog to be updated very often - two little ones take up a lot of time - (particularly the elder boy who has energy levels similar to those of Dash from The Incredibles) but do please leave your comments - that's the fun bit!
